Kirby (カービィ, Kābī) is a small, round, pink creature that has the ability to swallow his enemies and take on their powers. He continually has to stop King Dedede's mischievous plans and save Dream Land. Meta Knight also occasionally shows up as Kirby's rival, though Kirby has purer goals. The character first appeared in Kirby's Dream Land for the Game Boy, and was created by legendary video game developer Masahiro Sakurai, who later went on to direct the popular Super Smash Bros. series, which Kirby also appears in. Kirby has also been in anime and manga based on the games.

Kirby was originally named Popopo, and his model was created as a blob placeholder sprite during the development of what would be the first Kirby game, originally titled 'Twinkle Popopo' instead of the current Hoshi no Kābī (translated as 'Kirby of the Stars').

It's possible that Kirby is named after the Kirby Corporation, a company who builds vacuums. It's also been said that he's actually named after John Kirby, a lawyer who works for Nintendo who saved them from a lawsuit against Universal Studios.

One of Kirby's main attacks is to suck up enemies and copy their attacks. The following is a list of some of the transformations that he can become. Some of the transformations can only be found in the Super Smash Bros. series. These include the major Nintendo characters such as Mario and Link.

Animal	Gaw Gaw	Kirby receives a makeover. He gains brown fur with white feet, two toes on each foot, three claws on each hand, and a stuffed cap. Animal Kirby has a variety of animal-related abilities, such as digging and slashing enemies with his claws.
Backdrop/Suplex	Bugzzy	Kirby gets a blue headband (red for Backdrop). He can perform different wrestling moves on his opponents.
Ball	Bubbles	Kirby turns into a ball. He can bounce higher when holding down B.
Balloon	Bloon	Kirby can turn into a balloon. Touch him to make him inflate. While in balloon form, Kirby can float freely in the air until he hit an enemy or after you touch Kirby the third time.
Beam	Waddle Doo	Kirby puts on something that looks like a jester's hat, and fires a beam in front of him from up to down.
Bomb	Poppy Bros. Jr., Faley	Kirby puts a blue cap on. He is able to throw an infinite number of bombs.
Bowser	Bowser	Kirby gains Bowser's hair, horns, and eyebrows. He can breath fire similar to Fire Kirby.
Cook	Cook Kawasaki	Kirby wears a chef hat and will cook all enemies on screen in a giant pot turning them into recovery items. Can only be used once.
Cupid	Cupie	Kirby has a halo and sprouts wings. He is able to fly in place and shoot arrows.
Cutter	Sir Kibble, Boomer	Kirby puts a gladiator hat and throws blade like boomerangs. Kirby can also cut with the hat's blade.
Dr. Mario	Dr. Mario	Kirby wears a doctors mirror and can throw power pellets.
Donkey Kong	Donkey Kong	Will grow hair and put on DK's tie. He'll be able to perform Giant Punch.
Fighter	Knuckle Joe, Box Boxer	Kirby puts on a red fighter's headband. He is able to perform all sorts of fighting moves.
Fire	Hot Head, Burning Leo	Kirby wears a fiery hat. He is able to breathe fire and envelop himself in it.
Fox	Fox McCloud	Will look similar to Fox and will be able to use his Blaster.
Ganondorf	Ganondorf	Kirby has hair like Ganondorf and delivers a powerful punch.
Ghost	Tedhaun	Kirby wears a sheet around him, giving him the appearance of a ghost. He is able to possess enemies and use their various abilities to attack his enemies.
Luigi	Luigi	Kirby wears Luigi's hat and can throw green fireballs that aren't affected by gravity.
Lucario	Lucario	Kirby wears a hat resembling Lucario's head and can charge and shoot off Aura Spheres.
Link	Link	Kirby wears Link's cap similar to Sword Kirby, but can shoot arrows.
Magic	Boxy	Kirby puts on a magician's hat. He is able to perform all kinds of magic.
Mario	Mario	Will put on Mario's hat and will gain the ability to throw fireballs.
Mewtwo	Mewtwo	Kirby grows two ear-like extrusions on his head and gains the ability to form and shoot off Shadow Balls.
Mike	Walky, Mr. Tick Tock	Kirby puts on a pair of red earphones. His main, and only method of attack is singing very badly in his microphone, destroying every normal enemy in sight.
Ninja	BioSpark	Kirby wears a red hat with a ponytail on it. He is able to use various ninja techniques.
Parasol	Parasol Waddle Dee, Parasol Waddle Doo, Jumpershoot, Bumber, Sasuke	Kirby wields a parasol, and he uses it to fight his foes.
Peach	Princess Peach	Kirby wears Princess Peach's crown and holds Toad out in front of him as a shield. If enemies attack Toad he will shoot spores at them.
Pikachu	Pikachu	Kirby will wear Pikachu's two pointy ears and will gain the ability to use Thunder Jolt.
Samus	Samus Aran	Kirby will put on Samus' famed helmet and will be able to perform Charge Shot.
Sheik	Sheik	Kirby wears Sheik's turban and can throw needles.
Sleep	Noddy	Kirby wears a sleeper's cap, and the only thing he does is sleep, making him defenseless against enemies.
Smash	Master Hand	Kirby appears as he normally does but is able to perform his side, up and down special attacks from the Super Smash Bros. games (Hammer, Final Cutter and Stone)
Sword	Blade Knight, Sword Knight, Heavy Knight	Kirby puts on a cap similar to Link's. He is able to use a variety of sword techniques.
Toon Link	Toon Link	Kirby wears a cel shaded version of Link's cap and shoots arrows.
Tornado	Twister, Caller	Kirby dons a crown with a small twister on it. He is able to spin around to make a small cyclone.
U.F.O.	U.F.O.	Kirby gets inside a personal U.F.O., and is able to perform a few attacks based on lasers of varying strength.
Wario	Wario	Kirby wears Wario's helmet and will try to take a bite out of his enemies.
Wheel	Wheelie, Grand Wheelie	Kirby wears a red baseball cap backwards. He is able to turn into a self-propelled wheel that's invincible while active.
Wing	Birdon, Flapper	Kirby gains a Native American headress, a pair of wings, and long feathery streamers. He is able to fly in the air more efficiently in this form.
Yoshi	Yoshi	Will put on a cap that resembles the top of Yoshi's head. Will gain his Egg Lay ability.
Young Link	Young Link	Kirby wears a smaller version of Link's hat and can shoot fire arrows.
Zelda	Princess Zelda	Kirby wears Zelda's headress and uses Nayru's Love.

[edit] Shadow Kirby

Shadow Kirby is an alternate version of Kirby that appeared in Kirby & the Amazing Mirror in the "mirror world". In this equivalent, he's a gray (dark gray) colored doppelganger that greatly resembles Kirby. During the beginning of the game, Shadow Kirby often times attacked Kirby, though in the end the two realised that they were after the same goal of saving their own worlds, and teamed up to take down Dark Mind.
