The Virtual Console (バーチャルコンソール, Bācharu Konsōru) is a faction of the Wii's Wii Shop Channel where both old and new games can be downloaded onto the Wii console.

Games from older consoles can be downloaded for a certain price, which is measured in Wii Points. One Wii Point equates to one penny in the Americas.

One problem with the emulation of Nintendo 64 games is the incompatibility with the N64's vibration feature, despite vibration being built-in on Gamecube and Wii controllers.

[edit] Control Options

Classic titles downloaded via the Virtual Console service can be controlled through three different methods. Some games support all three options, while others only support one or two.

Method 1: Wii Remote

The Wii Remote may be turned on its side in the vein of an NES controller. NES games support this configuration, as well as select other titles, such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Bomberman '93.

Method 2: Classic Controller

Classic Controller

The Classic Controller is an attachment for the Wii Remote, and is sold seperately from the console. It plugs into the Wii Remote's extension port. This controller resembles the SNES controller in many ways and features A, B, X, and Y face buttons, two analog sticks, a control pad, two analog trigger buttons titled L and R, two small, circular, digital trigger buttons titled ZL and ZR, "-" Select, Home, and " " Start buttons, and a button on the top of the unit that opens up a clip in the back of the unit. When using the Classic Controller, the Wii Remote is meant to be rested on the lap and is deactivated. Most, if not all classic titles support this configuration.

Method 3: Nintendo GameCube Controller

Nintendo GameCube controllers may be used to play most downloaded Virtual Console games. It is important to note that the Wii Remote and Classic Controller configurations take priority over the Nintendo GameCube controller configuration. For example, if a Nintendo GameCube controller is plugged into Slot 1 on the top of the Wii console and a Wii Remote or Classic Controller is being used by another player, the Nintendo GameCube Controller will automatically be assigned as Player 2's controller.

For new titles created in order to utilize the Wii's unique features, other control options than these may be utilized.
